The Tudor Workshop

on 16/10/2015

On Thursday we had a visit from Catherine Hammond of Epping Forest District and Lowewood Museums. We learnt a lot about how ordinary Tudors lived. Check out these photos and everyone’s comments. You will see how much it was enjoyed by all the boys.

On the 15th October 2015, I went to a tudor work shop and I learnt about two people whose jobs were tailors. Then two people dressed up, Theo dressed up as a boy and Louis was a girl first Louis put on a red dress and we all laughed, then he put on a jacket that was black velvet and a strange looking hat. Theo wore a white shirt and a burgundy jacket.

The lady from the workshop showed us all of the pots and pans, spoons and plates the tudors used.

I liked the workshop, it was interesting.

On Thursday morning a lady called Catherine came to visit our school just before break time. She worked at a museum. It was hilarious when Peter and Alex dressed up as Tudors. Peter dressed up as Constance and Alex dressed up as Thomas – a wealthy Tudor. Men wore more posh clothes than women!

We also got to look at some strange objects, such as a watering pot and a wooden plate. The wooden plate had a little hole in it to put salt in.

Catherine explained to us that Tudors used to wash their clothes in a river. We also learned that the Tudors didn’t drink much water in those days as the water was not very clean. Instead, they drank beer – even the children drank beer!

The workshop was both fun and educational.

I enjoyed the visit yesterday from Catherine. Unfortunately I was only there for half of it as I had my music lesson.

It was great fun watching Theo and Louis dress up as Tudors. Theo became Thomas and Louis was Constance. We learnt that back then the men wore posher and more decorative clothes than the ladies. The Tudors used wee, water and crushed petal flowers to make the dye for their clothes.

Thomas was a tailor so he made his clothes more fashionable. He wore cream coloured top and trousers with a golden, sparkly gown over it. Thomas’ hat was black and oval-shaped.

Constance wore sew-on sleeves so in the summer she could take them off and in the winter she could put them back on. She was wearing a yellow-cream coloured top and over that she wore a puffy sleeved black and red dress. Constance also wore a white hat that looked like a chef’s hat.

Catherine told us that when ladies were washing their clothes in the lake, their heavy clothes sometimes pulled them down into the lake and they drowned.

Wow, Zac! Even though you missed half of the workshop, you still learnt and remembered a lot from what you saw. Well done, and well written!

After break at school today a lady called Catherine came to explain to us what it was like to be a Tudor citizen. At first Louis dressed up as a Tudor lady and Theo dressed up as a Tudor man, and Catherine showed us how to put a fire out if the house caught on fire during Tudor times. First you got a jar with one hole at the top and many holes in the bottom. Then you filled it up with water but kept it under water. Finally you put your thumb on the single hole at the top and took it out of the water. The water wouldn’t fall out of the bottom until you removed your thumb from the hole on the top (this was due to the air pressure inside the jar). The water spurting out of the many holes was then used to put out the flames. I thought this was very interesting and that the Tudors were very clever.

I loved the Tudor workshop because we did lots of exiting activities. The first activity Louis and Theo had, to dress up in Tudor clothes. We learned a lot about Tudor clothes. The next activity was handling rupilca of tudor objects I got a bill paper and an ink pen and also a piece of a plate. There was a vase that went in water an if you put your thumb on the top it would stop the water dripping. we also saw a initial of a family that were had lots of money.

  5. Robin says:

I think that the Tudor workshop was interesting and funny. My friends Louis and Theo were dressed up as a boy and girl which was very hilarious. We were allowed to hold real Tudor items from Tudor times and fragments of broken pottery as well. I was holding a square meal dish. It is made out of wood. In the square meal there is a big hole and a small hole . The big hole has the actual food in it. And the small hole has the extras in (salt, sugar, etc, etc). Catherine who came in to run this workshop told us all about Thomas and Constance who were Tudor people who in Tudor times lived in the museum where Catherine works and how they lived their daily lives. Thomas was a tailor and had a business of his own. Constance did not have a job. We know that Thomas and Constance went for a walk every morning. They hammered nails into their fire place spelling out: ‘ TCxT’. This stood for: Thomas and Constance Taylor. The ‘x’ is there to keep witches out. (A Tudor myth). That is everything I learnt on Thursday thanks to Catherine.

    • lochinver4jch says:

A really good account, Robin. It sounds as if you found out a lot about life in Tudor times!

  6. Yash says:

On Thursday a lady called Catherine who was from a museum, came to school to tell us about the Tudors and how they lived.

Catherine showed us a laminated paper with a picture of nails stuck on wood of someone’s initials. The initials were TCXT the initials meant – Thomas Constance Tailors (as they were both tailors). All Tudors stuck nails in woods to show their initials. Then Catherine, asked Louis to dress up as Constance and Theo to dress up as Thomas. They both wore Tudors clothes, but theirs was more fashionable and nice as they were tailors and made their own. Clothes were very expensive in Tudor times. After, Louis and Theo got undressed and we looked at some Tudor artefacts. We saw bits of pots, a flame holder and we saw made pots. Catherine told us about the artefacts that we saw, and we had to guess what they were used for.

We found out that the Tudors had to go to far away to rivers to get water and to clean their clothes. The woman cleaned their clothes in the river, but sometimes as the clothes were very heavy when the women were washing the clothes, the water could pull them down to the bottom and they could drown. The Tudors did not drink water because it wasn’t very clean so they mostly drank beer as it was clean, even the children drank beer!

I really enjoyed the workshop and felt that I learnt a lot about Tudors.

An excellent write-up, Yash – lots of detail included, as requested. I am glad you enjoyed the workshop and learnt so much from it!

On Friday we had a visit from Catherine about the Tudor workshop.Theo and louis dresed up as Constance and Thomas . Theo was Thomas, Louis was Constance. We got to hold objects that Tudors might have used. They used 2 shoes because the Tudor streets were filthy. They put their pair of shoes in a wooden pair so when the were walking in the street the shoe won’t get dirty. They used buckets to carry water in. It had holes in they bottom. The water won’t come out if you put your thumb on the top. If you wanted to have a fire in winter and a spark flew on to your floor your house would catch on fire. if you used the water to dampen the floor so if the spark hit the floor it would not cause a fire.

  8. Alex says:

Last Thursday morning Catherine came in and talked to us about the Tudors and how they lived. The first thing she asked us was if anybody wanted to dress up as a Tudor lady and Tudor boy. Louis became Constance and Theo became Thomas. Firstly, she put a vest/petticoat on Louis, followed by padding to make the dress stick out at the back. Then she put another red and black dress on, so Constance would keep warm during the Winter. Finally she put a tall black hat on him. She then dressed Theo up as a rich Tudor boy called Thomas. He wore a vest with frilly bits around his neck, his maroon trousers were puffy and he wore a square-shaped, thick white coat.
After that we all looked at antique objects from the Tudor times. I learnt lots of interesting facts. I found out that the Tudors ate their food using their fingers, they didn’t use knives or forks! To put a fire out, you sprayed water over it using a pot with one hole at the top and more holes at the bottom. Tudors had leather shoes and wooden shoes. They would wear their expensive leather shoes in the house but when they walked on the streets, they slipped on wooden shoes underneath their leather ones, so their expensive ones wouldn’t be covered in dirt.
I really enjoyed the Tudor workshop with Catherine.

    • lochinver4jch says:

A very good account of the workshop, Alex. Well done. I am glad you enjoyed the workshop so much!

  9. Sebastian says:

I had a good time because Catherine a Tudor lady came and showed us how Tudor life was. Louie and Theo dressed up as Tudors. She gave me a small piece of pottery and she showed us a pot that can carry water without spilling a drop. She put her finger on top so no air could get in and it did not spill out. She was was very realistic and we learnt alot.

  10. Ty says:

I had fun at the Tudor workshop.A lady called Catherine was showing us that in Tudor times they wore puffy clothes to show that they were rich! Theo and Louis dressed up as wife and husband named Thomas and Constance. They wore hats and dresses. We saw a writing on a Tudor ceiling that meant Thomas and Catherine are rich. That they believed scared away witches! She showed us this bottle with water in that me and Miles had because we were looking at Tudor items in pairs. The bottle had holes at the bottom (tiny holes) the water poured into this bucket and when she put her thumb on the big hole at the top where you pour the water in the water stopped pouring! It was air pressure holding the water in side the bottle! And that was the Tudor workshop for me! I learnt a lot from that.

I’m glad you enjoyed the workshop and made so many interesting discoveries about Tudor times.

  11. Ratshan says:

When it was history this nice lady called Catherine came. For the Tudor workshop she asked if any one wanted to dress up. Louis and Theo got chosen first. Louis was a girl dressed up. He first had to put this white thing on then he had to put this bum cushion. Then he had to put the dress on. Every one laughed when he turned round . Then it was Theo’s turn. He first put the white thing on again then he had to put on trousers and top on it was so big for him. They were a couple called Constance and Thomas.

Then she gave us some things that people from Tudors came from she told us what every thing. If it stunk like poo there had this thing that had strong nice smells. That takes that disgusting poo smell away. If there was a fire you would have this water plunger that will take it away. If you put your thumb over it the water will stop and if you let go the water will come. Our thanks to Catherine that works in a Museum she can tell us what to do. Thank you Catherine.

  12. Louis says:

On Thursday at the Tudor workshop I was asked by Catherine, our visitor, to dress up as a Tudor woman. At first everybody laughed (including myself) because I was wearing an “amazingly funny” dress which made me look like I had a rather large posterior! Apparently, this type of dress showed that the wearer was wealthy. Afterwards, Catherine gave us objects to look at and my favourite was a wooden device that looked a bit like a kettle and which helped you to dampen the floor so the sparks from the fireplace wouldn’t set the house alight. What the Tudors did was to fill the device up with water then put their thumbs over a hole at the top. This stopped the water from coming out. When they took their thumbs off, water came out from the holes in the bottom to make the floor damp. Another thing that I found interesting was that Tudors nailed their initials and occupation into their fireplace. I had a really fun day and learnt a lot.

I’m glad you enjoyed the workshop, Louis. You certainly did learn a lot about life in Tudor times.

  13. Ehsen says:

On Thursday I enjoyed it when Catherine came over!

She told us about what everyday life was like in Tudor times. She told us that water was very dirty and so they drank beer. It was fascinating how the roads were so dirty with waste all over them that they had a wooden heel, so that their shoes did not get poo all over them!! I think it was funny that in Tudor times if your bottom was not fat you had to wear a bottom cushion! She told us that being fat was in fashion. I think the white cloak they wore was exceptional because they did not wash any clothes accept for the cloak. The girls’ clothes must have been really funny looking at them now !!!!!!!

She told us that all I have written was an everyday life in Tudor times.

  14. Niam P says:

After break we had a visit from Catherine for a Tudor workshop. Our class came rushing in, straight after break. Catherine came in with many boxes and firstly she opened all of them. Then Catherine showed us a picture, it was a picture of a wooden beam on top of the fire place. It was a two T’s and a C. She asked if we knew what the letters stand for. Robin answered,”Thomas!” it was the correct answer for one of the T’s. After we had think of a girl’s name nobody had the answer. The answer was Constance.
Catherine followed with a clue for the last T and told us it was a surname. It stood for Tailors. The Tudors put it there because they believed in witches. They had one of these at the entrance of each home.
Catherine had to pick two children to dress up. Louis and Theo were picked. Louis dressed up as Constance and Theo was Thomas. Firstly Louis got changed, it was hilarious seeing him dressed as a girl!! Theo changed into his outfit and they had a picture taken together.
Once Louis and Theo got out of their outfits we were handed some Tudor replicas. I got given a pot, it had many handles because the Tudors used to drink from the same cup. We had to explore our replicas, Catherine told us how Tudors would use them in everyday life. I thought the most fascinating was the water dispenser. It would be used to damp the wooden floorboards round the fire place, incase a spark flew out, it would cause a fire but with damp wood the spark could ignite a fire and would die.
I really enjoyed myself, learnt a lot about how the Tudors lived and found the whole experience very interesting.

On Thursday we had a visit from Catherine Hammond of Epping Forest and Lowewood Museums. She came because we were having a Tudor workshop. Louis and Theo dressed up in Tudor costumes. They went round the room showing off. Secondly, Catherine gave us Tudor plates, cups, candle holders and bits of broken things. My favourite part was when Louis was showing off because their costumes looked really funny.

  16. Miles B says:

I thought that the Tudor Workshop was great! It was funny when Louis and Theo got dressed up as a Tudor lady and a Tudor man. The item that Ty and I had was a way to get the water from the garden to the house. I learnt that they had wooden soles on their shoes, to protect them from getting dirty. I also learnt that the Tudors believed in witches, so they put a metal cross above a window or fireplace to keep the witches away. They got this from Anne Boleyn who had six fingers.

  17. lochinver4jch says:

From Theo: The Tudor workshop was really exciting, I did lots of exciting things like dressing up as a Tudor boy with one of my friends, Louis. I learnt lots of interesting things about life in Tudor times.

The Tudors used to drink loads of beer, it was the cleanest thing to drink because water wasn’t that fresh. The water used to have urine in it. Beer was very common those days even the toddlers used to drink it!!! P.s Wish I could do that.

It was the fashion for Tudor men to wear a frilly collar, called a ruff, puffy sleeves and ornate materials. The rich people wore gold and silver. They used to eat on a wooden tray.

The Tudors believed in witches so they made a cross on the windows and fire places so the witches wouldn’t come.

    It was a great workshop.

  18. Thanasis says:

From Thanasis: On Thursday we had a Tutor workshop, it was really fun.
Louis and Theo dressed as Constance and Thomas. They must have been really hot in that suit especially Constance/Louis. I learned that if for example Constance fell in a pond she would drown and probably die because her suit was very heavy. Constance was puffed with clothes. Every one was laughing at what Louis was wearing but I did not laugh because I thought it was interesting. There was something around the waist. Then we decorated Constance/Louis with clothes and more clothes and more. It is very hard to make these clothes because you can’t buy them. You would need wool and you need to knit, which is hard. That is why you would probably only have one kind of dress.
Now about the boy called Thomas payed by Theo. Thomas wears the cool suits. He might have a shiny one. He may be wear a blazer and a hat. Normally a black hat. In the end of a show when you bow you won’t show the bottom part of the hat because most people in Tutor times had the nits in their hair. Most times if you have nits they go on your hat if you are wearing one.
The lady in the classroom handed objects out to every pair. I was with Niam P and we had something unusual: it was a cup with many handles on it. Me and Niam P thought that the lower ones were for small kids and the others for big kids or adults. But we were wrong, because different people drank from it and they would take a different handle and would sip from different edges. Sometimes they would do a trick and put a hole through it and whatever they were drinking would spill on the person’s clothes. They normally drank beer because it was the most clean thing to drink. They did not have taps and clean water. I learnt that Anne Boleyn had six fingers and in total twelve fingers in both hands! People called her a witch because of this.
    I had a perfect day.

    • lochinver4jch says:

An excellent account, Thanasis. Well done! You obviously enjoyed the workshop and learnt lots from it.

  19. William P says:

    From William P.
I was late so I missed roughly half the lesson but I enjoyed the part of it I saw. I arrived just as Catherine was taking about wooden trenchers. The wooden trenchers had a hole in the top right corner for salt. I thought it was for sugar because the Tudors seem to have sugar with everything (Elizabeth even brushed her teeth with it!) The trenchers were deep so that they could pile food on them and they could hold stews and soups. I thought they were also made of bread, are they? One of my favourite things was the pot that held the water that they sprinkled on the wooden floor to stop sparks burning down the whole house. It came out exactly like a shower in your house. I thought it was pretty clever.
I also liked the candle holder for two candles made of different types of waxes, I already knew about beeswax candles but not that they were only for special occasions and I hadn’t heard of the reed with animal fat around it candle that they used on ordinary days. The piece of pottery that I was allowed to feel was cold and smooth and bright red.
When I saw the pot with lots of handles, I was completely mystified, I thought it was lots of loops for a person to put their fingers through so they wouldn’t drop it. I was very surprised when I found out that it was for lots of people to drink from and had lots of handles because they needed to drink from different places on the rim so as not to give bugs to each other! I thought it was quite funny that people made a small hole underneath one of the handles so that when the person took that handle and tried to drink from the pot, they would get wine on their clothes (no one was allowed to play a joke like that on the king unless it was the jester or they would get their head chopped off!).

    • lochinver4jch says:

A really well-written and detailed account, William. You certainly learnt a lot from the workshop!

  20. Jack says:

Last Thursday a lady called Catherine came into school to talk to us about the Tudors.
Catherine told us how the Tudors had to travel for miles to get to rivers to get water to wash their clothes with. They used buckets to carry water in, the buckets had holes in them but if you put your thumb over the hole it stopped the water coming out. The water wasn’t clean enough to drink.
Louis and Theo dressed up as a Tudor man and lady called Thomas and Constance. They could change the material and length of their sleeves depending on the weather. Their shoe soles were wooden and the shoes were shaped like an otters tail.
The Tudors made lots of pottery, Catherine showed us some square plates.
I really enjoyed the workshop and finding out so much about the Tudors. Jack
    I really enjoyed today

  21. Toju says:

In the Tudor workshop I learnt more about the Tudors. My favourite bit was when Louis and Theo dressed like Tudors. Louis dressed like Constance and Theo dressed like Thomas. I learnt that Tudors liked to play tricks on each other but only the jester can play a trick on Henry the viii who is the king. We each got Tudor objects and Tudor pottery. I got a feather and ink and paper.
