Today in History………..

on 11/11/2019

………..Catherine Hammond from the Epping Forest District Museum paid us a visit. She told us a lot about the lives of ordinary people living and working during Tudor times. We found out about their clothes and the everyday objects that they used.

We learned so much, and it was fantastic to have such a hands-on experience of history!

Today we had a history workshop and we saw some Tudor objects. Arthur and Arjun dressed up as Thomas and Constance. We had to guess what clothes went on who and we got most of them wrong. The pottery was real and the other pieces were replicas.

The lady (Catherine Hammond from Epping Forest district museum) told us that people in Tudor times wore more fabric then they needed so they would look extra wealthy. Crosses were kept in Tudor houses to scare away witches. Tudors would throw water on the floor to keep fires from spreading. They wouldn’t shower so they rubbed themselves with a dry cloth.

The most interesting fact was that a Tudor’s surname was usually his job. Thomas’s job was a tailor and his surname was, Tailor. In Thomas’s house he put his and his wife’s initials on the fireplace TCT Thomas Constance Tailor.

    The Tudor Workshop 2019

Today we had a Tudor history workshop. Catherine Hammond who works for the Epping Forest District museum came over to Lochinver House and taught us a bit about the Tudors and how they lived.

First Catherine gave us some initials and they were TCxT . The first T stands for Thomas(His first name), the C stood for Constance ( Thomas’ husband). The x means is about a Tudor belief that there were witches and they believed , if they had an x on their initials they would be “Witch proof.” Now the last initial would usually mean the person’s job for T in this contenxt means Tailor ( a person that makes clothes). Arthur and Arjun dressed up as Tudor Thomas and Tudor Constance.

Next we looked at some Tudor replicated objects ( I had a fancy quill and an ink pot)and we tried to find out what Thomas and Constance might use in their everyday lives; for example plates , their cups (which would have more than one handle)and that they wrote on parchment which was made out of fine English sheepskin, they didn’t write on paper. It was funny that women didn’t wear underwear and that the men would wear a bit of a frill on the neck part of their clothing that the women would usually wear. The men would wear clothing with more material than women’s clothing so it looked like they have more money so they can buy more material.

About the “witch”, whoever they thought was the witch they would duck them in water so they would drown , but if they did die they were innocent . If they survived then they would believed to be a witch a they would be burnt.

So that was our Tudor workshop and I really enjoyed it.

Today we had a history workshop, and in the workshop we learned about the Tudors. The person who showed all the things was called Catherine Hammond. She works at the Epping Forest district museum. At the start we were talking about two people called Thomas and Constance, we were talking about them because in the Tudor times them two used to live in the place which is now a museum. We also got to touch Tudor objects but they were replicas.

I learned that one cup had six hands, and that men in Tudor times wore clothes made out of silk. In Tudor times they used to make plates out of led which they did not know had some poison in it, we found out that the vest with the flowers is actually for the boy.

Today was really fun, and I really liked it.
